Moldovan Authorities Hope to Normalize Trade Relations With Russia

Moldova hopes the normalization of its trade relations with Russia will contribute to the continuation of the dialogue between the two countries in accordance with the World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, Moldova's Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Natalia Gherman said at the 69th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

MOSCOW, September 26 (RIA Novosti) - Moldova hopes the normalization of its trade relations with Russia will contribute to the continuation of the dialogue between the two countries in accordance with the World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, Moldova's Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Natalia Gherman said at the 69th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Trade relations across the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region had deteriorated, Gherman said Thursday. However, Moldova expects to continue the dialogue with Russia in accordance with the WTO rules and the CIS rules, and to renew the normal trade relations with Russia, the minister added.

On July 18, Russia's consumer rights watchdog Rospotrebnadzor suspended imports of canned vegetables from Moldova.

Russia's agriculture watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor on July 18 introduced temporary restrictions on Moldovan fruit imports.

Moldova signed its EU association agreement on June 27, together with Georgia and Ukraine. The agreement envisages the establishment of a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area with the EU.

After the move, Russia warned Moldova of a possible switch from the free trade regime to the regime of most favored nation treatment.
