MOSCOW, September 25 (RIA Novosti) - Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani said at a UN Security Council special session that religion suffers from terrorism, Al Jazeera reported Thursday.

"Terrorism causes damage to religion," Al Thani said, stressing that the Arab community is greatly affected by this issue.

Qatar's emir added that peace would not be achieved without a dialogue based on equality and international law and stressed his country's role in fighting terrorism.

US President Barack Obama said at the 69th session of the UN General Assembly on Wednesday that Islam as a religion teaches peace and that the United States is not and will never be at war with Islam.

"We reaffirm that the US is not and never will be at war with Islam. ... Islam teaches peace. ... When it comes to America and Islam, there is no us and them, there is only us," Obama said, Al Jazeera reported.

The UN Security Council on Wednesday unanimously adopted a US-drafted resolution on foreign terrorist fighters, condemning violent extremism, which can be conducive to terrorism, and sectarian violence and the commission of terrorist acts by foreign terrorist fighters.

The Unites States carried out a number of airstrikes against IS positions in Syria using aircraft, drones and Tomahawk missiles. Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates also reportedly took part in the attacks.
