MOSCOW, September 19 (RIA Novosti) - US President Barack Obama on Thursday declined the initiative to give Ukraine a special status of a non-NATO ally, according to Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko as cited by CNN.

Speaking in an interview soon after the meeting with his US counterpart, Poroshenko told the journalists that Obama "said no" to his plea for Ukraine's "special" security status outside the military bloc.

The Ukrainian president added, however, that ties between Kiev and Washington were much closer than Ukraine could ever aspire for with the status of a non-NATO ally.

"We actually have more then we asked. We have enough and [are] completely satisfied with the cooperation with the White House," Poroshenko assured CNN.

President Poroshenko on Thursday made an emotional plea to US Congress in a bid to convince US lawmakers that Ukraine was "on the forefront of the fight for democracy" and needed strong US support, including a special status with NATO and supplies of heavy weapons.

Grasswire later quoted Poroshenko as saying at a press briefing in Washington that Kiev was "polite enough not to ask for NATO membership." "But we keep it in mind," he added.
