Independent Scotland would support the EU sanctions against Moscow amid the Ukrainian crisis, First Minister of Scotland Alex Salmond said Thursday at the press briefing on the anniversary of the referendum when Scots voted to reestablish a Scottish parliament after 300 years.

EDINBURGH, September 11 (RIA Novosti) – Independent Scotland would support the EU sanctions against Moscow amid the Ukrainian crisis, First Minister of Scotland Alex Salmond said Thursday at the press briefing on the anniversary of the referendum when Scots voted to reestablish a Scottish parliament after 300 years.

"I don't agree with significant aspects of Russian policy in Ukraine," Salmond said. "We have indicated our support for the sanctions taken, not just by the UK Government, but also the EU. I believe that the situation in Ukraine can be stabilized, a truce can be upheld and we can within weeks de-escalate the situation and that is the hope and belief of everyone with common sense."

"Upholding International law is very important for us and that has guided our attitude, not just the Scottish National Party but the Scottish Parliament, to a range of international disputes and conflicts," Salmond added.

On Monday, the European Union officially adopted a new package of sanctions against Russia over its alleged role in the Ukrainian crisis, but postponed its coming into force in order to examine the implementation of the ceasefire agreement in Ukraine.
