KIEV, September 10 (RIA Novosti) – The Kiev government has started the construction of fortifications on the border with Russia, the press service of the eastern Ukraine special operation said Wednesday.

“On instructions from Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, top priority fortification works have begun at certain areas,” the press service said in a statement.

The press service also noted that the construction of two fortified belts is planned.

On September 5, Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers approved a draft of the State Border Guard Service’s proposal to build and equip a reinforced barrier between Ukraine and Russia.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said on September 3, that the country began the implementation of a “Wall” project, which will be “an actual state border between Ukraine and the Russian Federation” and which should be completed within six months.

Yatsenyuk also stressed the need to create a new military stance reflecting Russia as an “aggressor nation," which threatens the territorial integrity and national security of Ukraine.

On August 28, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko canceled his visit to Turkey in light of Russian troops allegedly crossing into Ukraine to assist independence supporters in the east of the country.

Moscow denied Kiev’s claims, calling them groundless.

Russia’s EU envoy Vladimir Chizhov said such claims were sparked by Kiev’s attempts to justify its military setbacks in the east and downplay the positive results of recent talks in the Belarusian capital Minsk.
