If Scotland becomes independent from the United Kingdom as a result of an upcoming referendum scheduled for September 18, this will be a positive development for the island of Corsica that wants to separate from France, the head of the Corsica Libera political party Jean-Guy Talamoni told RIA Novosti Wednesday.

MOSCOW, September 10 (RIA Novosti) – If Scotland becomes independent from the United Kingdom as a result of an upcoming referendum scheduled for September 18, this will be a positive development for the island of Corsica that wants to separate from France, the head of the Corsica Libera political party Jean-Guy Talamoni told RIA Novosti Wednesday.

“We are closely watching the situation in Scotland, as well as in Catalonia, where a similar referendum will be held on November 9. We are in permanent contact with these countries and we have taken part in a number of international campaigns to support independence of those regions,” Talamoni said.

He mentioned that officials from Corsica often visit Scotland and Catalonia in order to discuss independence plans, and to share common experiences.

“The success of our international partners will positively affect the situation in Corsica. Scotland and Catalonia only gained new statuses a few years ago and can now decide on their independence. We are currently working on obtaining a special status for our region, so in the upcoming years we will also be able to hold independence debates,” Talamoni added.

Corsica is a large island in the Mediterranean Sea, and although it is located closer to Italy, it belongs to France since it was conquered in 1769. There are several political parties calling for some degree of autonomy, or even full independence from France. The constitution of Corsica was written in Italian, but the nation also has its own, Corsican language.
