MOSCOW, September 3 (RIA Novosti) – International human rights organization Amnesty International called for an impartial and effective investigation into the death of Rossiya Segodnya photojournalist Andrei Stenin in Ukraine, Heather McGill, the organization's representative in Ukraine told RIA Novosti Wednesday.
“We always call for a thorough, impartial and effective investigation into deaths of this kind, it is particularly important. And we are calling for the investigation of similar incidents in Ukraine,” McGill said.
The Amnesty International representative in Ukraine also expressed deep concern over Stenin’s death.
“Amnesty International deeply regrets the tragic death of the journalist. We are very concerned obviously with the death of a journalist. It is particularly important that the journalists are able to do their job, to be protected to give us the information that we need,” McGill added.
On Wednesday, Rossiya Segodnya Director General Dmitry Kiselev announced that according to information from the Russian Investigative Committee, Stenin, who went missing in Ukraine early in August, died about a month ago near Donetsk.
The car, in which Stenin was traveling in while on an editorial assignment, was shot at and torched on a highway.
According to the Russian Investigative Committee, Stenin was killed in a Ukrainian attack on a column of refugees guarded by several eastern Ukraine independence supporters.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry demanded that Kiev launch a full investigation into Stenin’s death. Stenin is the fourth Russian journalist killed in the Ukrainian conflict.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and other Russian politicians have expressed their condolences over Stenin’s death.
Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council denied any involvement of Kiev’s militants in the tragedy.
