DUBAI, August 19 (RIA Novosti) - Algerian intelligence has discovered a network that transports militants enrolled in the Islamic State (IS) insurgent group from Syria to southern Europe for terrorist attacks, Algeria’s An-Nahar newspaper reported Tuesday.

According to the newspaper’s sources in the country’s intelligence agency, 160 Syrian citizens, including women and minors, have been detained in several Algerian regions. The detainees came to Algeria as a group, and then spread across the North African country. All of those apprehended had identical cellphones, GPS navigation systems and a combined $100,000. During interrogations, the detainees claimed they were recruited by the IS in Syria and were to be trained in Libya to perform terrorist attacks in Europe.

Algerian intelligence noted that the group was part of a network of six or seven similar IS extremist recruitment and transit channels active in Algeria, Libya, Jordan and some European states.

The Islamic State (IS) is an extremist Sunni group that originated as a branch of al-Qaeda in Syria. Since 2012, the IS has been fighting against Syrian government forces, and has started to gain momentum in Iraq in 2014. The militants seized vast areas of land and declared an Islamic caliphate in June.
