KIEV, August 19 (RIA Novosti) - The Ukrainian government plans to initiate the “Energy Independence” information campaign on Wednesday, which aims to inform Ukrainians about the importance of energy and natural gas conservation, the country’s Cabinet of Ministers said Tuesday in a press release.
“The information campaign will use both advertisements and direct messages to individuals, businesses and authorities at all levels necessary to save energy resources and replace natural gas with other kinds of energy, which we have enough of in Ukraine. First and foremost, we plan to make energy conservation and renewable sources of energy popular,” the statement said.
The press release stressed that the campaign will not be funded by the Ukrainian budget, but at the expense of aid programs funded by the EU, US and British governments.
On June 16, Russian gas giant Gazprom introduced a prepayment system for gas deliveries to Ukraine amid a dispute with Kiev over its $4.5 billion gas debt. The European Commission and Gazprom anticipate problems in winter, when Kiev is likely to run out of its own gas reserves.
