ROME, July 31 (RIA Novosti) – Over 120 Italian citizens were evacuated from Libya between 17 and 27 of July due to the deterioration of the security situation in the country, the statement issued by Italian Foreign Ministry late Wednesday said.

According to the document, Italian embassy in Tripoli maintains constant contact with foreign ministry’s crisis department due to the safety issues in the African country.

In the last two weeks over 120 Italians who arrived in Libya for contract work has been evacuated from the country with the help of four escort convoys and two charter flights. Another several flights will be organized within days.

Italy also assisted 30 citizens of other states to leave Libya at the requests of their country’s governments.

Earlier Tuesday, Libyan Health Ministry announced that 97 people were killed and 400 wounded in clashes around Tripoli international airport since July 13. On Sunday a number of other countries, including the United States, France and Turkey, evacuated their embassy workers and urged citizens to immediately leave Libya.

Escalation of violence in Libya began back in 2011 following the overthrow of country’s long-standing leader Muammar Gaddafi. A large number of armed groups continue operating in the country, taking over the whole districts. The militants possess a large arsenal of weapons, including heavy warfare that was seized from the government forces during the 2011 uprising.
