NEW YORK, July 28 (RIA Novosti) – US Secretary of State John Kerry said Monday that brokering a series of short-term ceasefires is the best chance for securing long-term peace between Israel and Palestinian militants in Hamas-run Gaza.
“We are continuing to work toward establishing unconditional 24-hour humanitarian cease-fire that will stop fighting,” Kerry told reporters in Washington upon returning from the Middle East and Europe.
“We believe the momentum generated by these short-term cease-fires is the best way to achieve a sustainable cease-fire,” he said.
Israel launched raids against Hamas militants in the coastal territory three weeks ago after a surge in rocket attacks. More than 1,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians, and 43 Israeli soldiers and two Israeli civilians have died in the violence.
