MOSCOW, July 28 (RIA Novosti) - The second US aid worker of the Samaritan's Purse international non-governmental organization fighting against Ebola virus in West African countries got infected with the virus in Liberia, the organization said in a statement Sunday.

Nancy Writebol tested positive for the virus while working in Monrovia, Liberia. Writebol, who arrived in Monrovia almost a year ago, became the second US citizen working in Liberia to get infected after Dr. Kent Brantl, who tested positive on Saturday. Both were working to combat Ebola since the outbreak Guinea in February.

Brantl, 33, who arrived to Liberia in October, was sent to a Samaritan’s Purse isolation center at ELWA Hospital for treatment and is in stable condition, CNN said quoting the organization's spokeswoman Melissa Strickland, who added that those receiving treatment on early stages have better chances of remaining alive.

Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone reported a total of 759 cases of the virus, including 467 deaths, as of June 30 according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Twenty two of those cases, including 14 deaths, were reported between June 25 and 30.

WHO Assistant Director-General, Dr. Keiji Fukuda, said in May the Ebola outbreak in West Africa was one of the most daunting outbreaks the organization had ever faced with the case fatality rate of up to 90 percent.

Ebola hemorrhagic fever is one of the deadliest viruses known to mankind. The virus is transmitted by direct contact with the blood or bodily fluids of an infected person. Transmission via contaminated medical equipment or other objects is also possible. No cure or vaccine for Ebola has been found.
