BOSTON, April 21 (RIA Novosti), Pyotr Martynychev – About 36,000 athletes will participate in the 118th Boston Marathon on Monday, amid unprecedented security measures put in place following last year’s terrorist attack near the finish line.

Police said they were taking all possible measures to prevent any emergencies. Many athletes were returning to Boston to finish their marathon and to honor those who died in the tragic event.

“We have a very well-thought-out plan, and we are very confident in it,” Sgt. Michael McCarthy told RIA Novosti.

“There is no specific threat to the marathon itself that we have intelligence of at this point,” he said.

Three people were killed and over 260 wounded after two bombs went off near the finish line of the prestigious Boston Marathon on April 15 last year. Two brothers were soon after identified as suspects in the blasts.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed in a gunfight with police in the days following the bomb attack. His younger brother, Dzhokhar, tried to flee the city but was wounded and later arrested.
