WASHINGTON, October 7 (RIA Novosti) – Better known for movies featuring vampires and ultra-violence, Russian-Kazakh director Timur Bekmambetov has turned family friendly with his latest project “The Snow Queen” scheduled for release in the US Oct. 11, the entertainment website Deadline.com has reported.

Bekmambetov served as producer for the 3D animated version of the Hans Christian Andersen tale, according to Deadline. It is the first feature length project by Russian computer animation studio Wizart Animation, according to the Moscow-based company’s website.

Bekmambetov also distributed the film in Russia through his own company, Bazelevs, although in the United States it will be distributed by Vertical Entertainment.

“The Snow Queen” tells the story of a young girl who must rescue her brother from an evil queen who has covered the world in ice. A sequel is already planned for next year, following the film’s successful December 2012 release in CIS and Baltic countries, Brazil and South Korea according to the Wizart Animation website.

Bekmambetov, who shot to fame after directing the Russian blockbuster “Night Watch,” has been busy of late. In September it was confirmed that he would be directing a remake of “Ben Hur,” while he is also reportedly working on a project about flesh-eating squirrels according to US media reports.
