MOSCOW, August 9 (RIA Novosti) - Most US diplomats have been evacuated from Lahore, Pakistan following a terrorist threat to the US consulate, US media reported citing top Department of State and other US officials.
The Department of State on Thursday told all diplomats in Lahore, except for some emergency personnel, to leave the city. They were moved to the capital Islamabad, CNN quoted officials as saying.
The department said it “ordered this drawdown due to specific threats concerning the US Consulate in Lahore.” It also warned US nationals against travel to Pakistan as “the presence of several foreign and indigenous terrorist groups poses a potential danger to US citizens throughout Pakistan,” according to a travel warning.
It was unclear, the CNN said, if the current threat to the consulate had to do with a recent threat to US facilities and personnel that forced the United States to close diplomatic posts in the Middle East, Asia and Africa.
