MOSCOW, June 21 (RIA Novosti) - A group of computer hackers known as Anonymous has threatened to carry out a massive attack on key N. Korean websites on June 25, the anniversary of the start of the Korean War.

Anonymous said in its Twitter blog on Thursday that over 30 government, media and business websites have been targeted.

In addition, the hackers threatened to disclose confidential information related to the military aspect of Pyongyang’s missile program in protest against policies conducted by N. Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Anonymous has earlier carried out several successful attacks on Pyongyang-based media sites, taking down Voice of Korea and the Korean Central News Agency.

Hackers generally use distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks to knock their targets offline.

The Korean War (June 25, 1950 –July 27, 1953) was a war between the Republic of Korea (South Korea) and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) primarily as a result of the political division of Korea by an agreement of the victorious Allies at the end of World War II.

The two Koreas technically remain "at war" since no peace treaty was signed when the Korean War ended in 1953 with an armistice agreement.

North Korea has been subjected to several rounds of UN Security Council sanctions since it declared itself a nuclear power in 2005. The reclusive communist regime broke off talks on its nuclear program with South Korea, China, the United States, Japan and Russia in 2009, after the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution condemning its missile tests.
