MOSCOW, March 22 (RIA Novosti) - About 100 people were injured in a multi-vehicle pileup on a highway near the southwestern Canadian city of Edmonton on Thursday, CBS News reported.

The agency said citing the Alberta Health Services that 22 of the injured, with one in a serious condition, were taken to hospitals for treatment, while some other 80 were treated at the scene of the crash.

“Cars flying off into the ditches beside us, smashing into each other on the road and in the ditches,” the agency quoted a witness, who was riding a Red Arrow passenger bus at the time.

The highway havoc was caused by a spring snowstorm and involved up to 200 vehicles.

“It’s a massive, massive crash. It extended, got to be at least a few kilometers,” the witness added.

Meteorologists said the Edmonton area was expected to receive 10 centimeters (four inches) of snow by Friday afternoon and weather conditions would worsen with wind gusts of up to 40 kmh (25 mph).
