Almost 40 Killed in West India Passenger Bus Crash

At least 37 people were killed and 15 injured after a private passenger bus plunged into a river in India’s western state of Maharashtra, NDTV television channel reported on Tuesday.

MOSCOW, March 19 (RIA Novosti) - At least 37 people were killed and 15 injured after a private passenger bus plunged into a river in India’s western state of Maharashtra, NDTV television channel reported on Tuesday.

The accident occurred at 2:30 a.m. local time, when the driver of the bus en route from Goa to Mumbai lost control of the vehicle on the Bharna bridge over Jagbudi river, some 190 km (118 miles) from Maharashtra's capital Mumbai. The bus rammed through the rail of the bridge and plunged into the river.

“There were some foreigners onboard; one Russian national has been rescued,” NDTV reported on its website.

Although injured, the driver of the bus survived in the accident, and policemen are testing him now for alcohol in his blood.

The majority of passengers hurt in the accident sustained head injuries as the bus capsized landing on the roof. The injured were taken to nearby Khed civil hospital, NDTV added.
