MOSCOW, March 11 (RIA Novosti) – One of the six suspects on trial for a gang-rape on a bus in New Delhi last December committed a suicide in jail, local NDTV television channel reported on Monday.
The television channel reported that the suspect, Ram Singh, committed the suicide by hanging himself in the Tihar jail at about 5:00 a.m. local time.
A 23-year-old female student was raped and beaten by six drunk men on a bus in New Delhi in December of 2012. She later died of sustained injuries in a Singapore hospital.
The woman and her companion were beaten with iron bars and thrown out of the moving bus. The assault triggered violent public protests in India. One police officer was killed in the protests.
Six suspects have been arrested, including bus driver Ram Singh and a minor. Five suspects were charged with the raping and the sixth suspect in the case is tried in a juvenile court, since he was a minor at the time of the crime. If convicted, the five could face the death penalty.
