The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) kept a close watch on Soviet dictator Josef Stalin’s only daughter after she defected to the US in 1967, according to newly declassified documents released Monday.

WASHINGTON, November 19 (RIA Novosti) The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) kept a close watch on Soviet dictator Josef Stalin’s only daughter after she defected to the US in 1967, according to newly declassified documents released Monday.

The files were released to The Associated Press (AP) under a Freedom of Information Act request.

The AP reports the documents show that the FBI was obtaining information on how Lana Peters’ arrival in the US was affecting international relations at the time.

Peters, who was known as Svetlana Alliluyeva before her defection, died last year at the age of 85 in a nursing home in the US state of Wisconsin.

The FBI files mainly contain memos and news articles from the late 1960s, the AP reported. One 1967 memo discusses a conversation with a confidential source who said Peters’ defection would have a “profound effect” on others considering such a move from the Soviet bloc.
