Doctors have sent 14-year-old Malala Yousafzai, shot in the head by Taliban gunmen last week, to the UK for treatment – Pakistan’s Inter Services Public Relations department confirmed Monday.

The move follows local media reports that her condition was improving. “She is making slow and steady progress which is in keeping with expectations. Recovery from this type of injury is always slow,” military spokesman Major General Asim Saleem Bajwa told Dawn News on Sunday.

Yousafzai was shot in the head last Tuesday as she was returning home from school. She had been an active blogger since she was 11 years old, was a vocal opponent of the Taliban, and campaigned for girls' rights, particularly - to education.

Pakistan’s government has criticized the attack and has offered a reward of over $100,000 for anyone who captures the gunmen. Hundreds of suspects were detained following the shooting but most were released on bail. Four arrests have been made in connection with the attack.
