The University of California has agreed to pay $30,000 in compensation to each of the 21 students who were pepper sprayed by campus police during a sit-in protest on November 18, 2011, the university system announced on Wednesday.
Internet videos of a campus policeman calmly walking up and down the line of seated students and spraying them with the noxious substance notched millions of views and sparked national outrage.
The out-of-court settlement includes a $250,000 payment to the attorneys representing the students.
In addition, each of the protesters attacked with the spray will receive a formal apology from Linda Katehi, the chancellor of UC Davis, the campus where the incident took place. Finally, the university must set aside $100,000 to fund potential awards to other injured protesters.
The students were demonstrating in support of the Occupy Wall Street movement.
The officer who sprayed the protesters is no longer employed by the campus police, a university spokesman said.
