A Chinese court on Monday handed down a death sentence to Gu Kailai, the wife of disgraced Chinese politician Bo Xilai, for the premeditated murder of British businessman Neil Heywood, Chinese media reported.
The court also gave Gu a two-year reprieve, which leaves open the possibility her sentence will be commuted to life in prison.
Gu, whose trial began on August 9, was found guilty of poisoning Heywood in an effort to protect her son over a business deal that had soured.
Her accomplice, a former household aide, was sentenced to nine years in prison.
When Heywood died last November, Gu’s husband Bo was the Communist Party chief in Chongqing and held a seat in the 25-member Politburo. He has since been stripped of his official posts and faces disciplinary action over “violations of party regulations,” according to Chinese state media.
