Indian anti-corruption campaigner Anna Hazare started on Sunday an indefinite hunger strike against corruption, which he believes is India’s major problem.

“Anna has started an indefinite hunger strike. He is ready to starve to death because he understands that corruption is eroding the country while authorities are doing nothing,” a spokesman named Rahul from the Hazare team told reporters.

The 75-year-old Gandhian is demanding that the authorities urgently adopt a tough law on the fight against corruption and institute criminal proceedings against some federal ministers whom human rights activists accuse of bribe-taking.

Hazare is holding his hunger strike in the Jantar Mantar district in the center of New Delhi. A poster above his head reads: “A Final Battle against Corruption.”
