Former Vice President of the United States Dick Cheney received a heart transplant on Saturday and is currently recovering in a Virginia hospital

Former Vice President of the United States Dick Cheney received a heart transplant on Saturday and is currently recovering in a Virginia hospital, CBS News reported citing a statement from Cheney’s office.

The 71-year-old politician was on the transplant waiting list for 20 months and after the surgery he does not know the name of the donor.

“Although the former vice president and his family do not know the identity of the donor, they will be forever grateful for this lifesaving gift,” CBS News quoted the statement as saying.

Cheney, who served as President George W. Bush's vice president from 2001 to 2009, has had heart problems most of his adult life and he suffered five heart attacks with the first one at the age of 37 and the most recent one in February of 2010.
