    The Turkish Interior Ministry said on Monday that 264 people had died in a massive earthquake that hit the eastern province of Van.

    Around 1,500 people were alos injured when the powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Van on Sunday afternoon.

    Some 400 people are also believed to be trapped under the debris of ruined buildings.

    Dozens of countries have already offered assistance to Turkey, among them Russia.

    In 1999, two earthquakes with a magnitude of more than 7 points on the Richter scale killed almost 20,000 people in Turkey.
