Supporters of the Armenian opposition movement Armenian National Congress on Thursday headed to Yerevan's downtown Liberty Square, a RIA Novosti correspondent said.
Parliament member Raffi Ovannisyan, the leader of the country's Heritage opposition party, is holding a hunger strike for the third day in a row at the square. He started the hunger strike in protest against the situation in Armenia.
Coordinator of the Armenian National Congress Levon Zurabyan said people's right to hold a rally on Liberty Square has been ignored since March 2008.
"We do not want clashes. Do not forget that police are also Armenians, we are sure that we can resolve all issues through peaceful negotiations," Zurabyan said.
The participants of the rally are to approach Liberty Square, where Zurabyan will hold talks with police.
There is no official information on the number of rally participants, but the opposition says 100,000 have joined the march.
The Armenian National Congress said it would hold rallies every day from March 17 through March 31.
