The final stages of erecting the world's tallest statue of Jesus Christ were put on hold Saturday until a larger crane arrives in the small Polish town of Swiebodzin, local radio reported.

Saturday's attempt to finish the assembly of the monument was watched by a crowd of onlookers and journalists, but the 400-ton crane on site proved inadequate to lift the head and arms into position.

Organizers said a 700-tom crane would be brought in next week to complete the construction.

Once complete, the 35-meter monument, which stands on a 16-meter mound of earth, will surpass the 34.2-meter Cristo de la Concodia in Bolivia.

The town, which is off the beaten track near the German border, hopes its gigantic Jesus will become a tourist attraction as famous as the Christ the Redeemer statue that overlooks Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

The statue in Swiebodzin was designed by local priest Sylvester Zawadzki and built through private donations.

The official inauguration of the monument is scheduled for November 21.
