A Polish transport plane failed to take off from an Estonian airport in the capital of Tallinn due to a chassis failure, an airport manager said on Wednesday.

The Ukrainian-built An-26 owned by the Polish company EXIN was taking off when its chassis broke. All four crewmen escaped injury.

"Rescue workers covered the plane in foam in case of a possible fire, after which the people ditched the plane," Erik Sakkov said on Estonian national television.

Sakkov said efforts are being made to remove the aircraft from the airstrip as it is hampering take-off and landing of all flights at the airport. The airport is currently closed to all arriving and departing flights.

In March of this year, another An-26 twin-engine cargo plane owned by the same Polish company had to make an emergency landing on Lake Ulemiste, which was covered in ice at the time, near Tallinn International Airport during a regular flight from Helsinki to Tallinn.

The reason for that emergency landing was due to engine failure.
