Afghan police have accidentally killed a senator in the north of the country, a source in the emergencies ministry said on Thursday.
Senator Mohammad Yunus, who represented Afghanistan's northern Baglan province in the upper house, or the House of Elders, was killed when passing by a police outpost in the provincial capital of Puli Khumri in a car on Wednesday.
Police, who were preparing an operation against Taliban militants who they expected to appear in the area, opened fire from assault riffles after the senator's car failed to stop on their orders, the ministry official said.
The official said the senator and the driver were killed and another passenger in the car was severely wounded.
However, the speaker's aide Abdul Khalek Hosseini told RIA Novosti in a telephone interview that the car, driven by the senator's son, stopped after several shots, and the people inside returned fire from pistols. A police officer was also killed in the shootout, he said.
The late senator was a member of the Islamic Party of Afghanistan.
