BEIJING, September 27 (RIA Novosti) - Medical tests have shown that over 120 children are suffering from lead poisoning in southeast China, the official news agency Xinhua reported on Sunday.
Two medical institutions tested a total of 287 children aged under 14 for lead poisoning and found that 121 of them had excessive levels of lead in their blood, the agency said, referring to the government of the Shanghang county in Fujian province.
The authorities have closed down a local battery factory, which is believed to have caused the poisoning, Xinhua said.
A string of lead poisoning cases among children in recent weeks has sparked violent protests by parents across China over factory pollution and public safety standards.
