KABUL, September 13 (RIA Novosti) - About 50 militants of the radical Islamist group Taliban were killed in NATO airstrikes in western Afghanistan, an Afghan army spokesman said on Sunday.

The airstrikes that took place Saturday in the province of Fatah followed an ambush by Taliban militants that killed two U.S. soldiers and seven Afghan troops, Col. Abdul Basir Ghori said.

During the battle with the militants, a NATO airstrike hit a home, killing a woman and a teenage girl, the spokesman said.

Violence has surged in Afghanistan in recent months, with the radical Islamic Taliban group, toppled in a 2001 U.S.-led campaign, staging regular attacks on provincial government officials, police and civilians.
