ATHENS, May 5 (RIA Novosti) - In a late night session Greece's parliament narrowly voted against indicting a member of the ruling party over corruption claims that could have led to early elections in the country.
With 146 members voting to indict Aristotle Pavlides, a member of Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis' New Democracy Party, the motion fell short of the 151 votes required in the 300-seat parliament.
The government with a majority of just one seat would have been forced to hold early elections if the vote had gone against Pavlides, who is accused of taking bribes in exchange for shipping contracts.
Some 144 lawmakers voted against the motion with eight blanks ballots cast and two MPs absent.
