HANOI, October 5 (RIA Novosti) - Twenty people have died in floods caused by Typhoon Lekima in northern Vietnam, a representative from a local organization supervising the fight against floods and typhoons said on Friday.

Typhoon Lekima, which struck Vietnam earlier this week, caused water to rise in rivers in the country's north.

Winds raging at speeds of more than 130 km/h (80 mph) devastated Vietnam's central region, the country's poorest, destroying crops over an area approximately 30,000 hectares (74,000 acres) wide, and knocking down phone and power lines in the Ha Tinh province.

About 5,000 houses are partly under water, and the main highways are closed.

The evacuation of people from dangerous mountainous regions is currently underway.
