NEW DELHI, July 31 (RIA Novosti) - A famous Indian film actor, Sanjay Dutt, 48, was sentenced Tuesday to six years in prison for possessing weapons bought with the help of participants in the 1993 Bombay bombings, India's television reported.

A series of thirteen bomb explosions shook Bombay (now Mumbai), India March 12, 1993. The most destructive bomb explosions in Indian history caused 257 civilian fatalities and 700 injuries.

Dutt was not among those who plotted the attacks, but was accused of possessing guns and ammunition at the time of the explosions. Dutt's accomplices were members of the criminal group responsible for the massacre.

The actor was freed on bail after serving 18 months 12 years ago. He has starred in many films since he was released. He was taken into custody in the courtroom immediately following the sentencing.

His arrest puts an end to the 1993 blasts case. A special court sentenced about 100 participants in the massacre, including 12 perpetrators who received death penalties and 20 criminals serving life sentences. Another 50 people will spend from three to 14 years in prison.

Investigators have established that the bombings were a response to the death of hundreds of Muslims in clashes following the destruction by radical Hindus of a medieval church in Uttar Pradesh in 1992.

The actor expected leniency from the court, saying he meant to protect his family after giving shelter to Muslims during the anti-Muslim campaign. However, the court accused Dutt of selling the arms to those found guilty.

India's Bollywood has failed to save the film star and could lose about $12 million for two unfinished Dutt films, Alibag and Fraud, The Guardian quoted Komal Nata, who runs Film Information, a trade guide, as saying.
