BEIJING, July 4 (RIA Novosti) - A tornado killed 14 and injured 146 people in two provinces in east China Tuesday, the Xinhua news agency reported Wednesday.
Gaoyou, a city in Jiangsu Province, and 11 neighboring villages were hardest hit by the twister, with a death toll of seven. A total of 53 people were injured, power cut off, houses damaged and hundreds of trees uprooted.
Local authorities estimated direct economic losses at about 55 million yuan ($7.2 million).
The tornado first struck the city of Tianchang, in Anhui Province, where seven dead and 93 injured were reported.
The wind at the center of the tornado raged at speed of up 100 kilometers (60 miles) per hour.
Weathermen are warning of possible natural disasters in the area. Among other things, they cite potential floods along the Huaihe River.
