CAIRO, July 3 (RIA Novosti) - At least 12 people were killed and 58 wounded in Egypt when two buses collided on a highway between Sharm el-Sheikh and El-Tor on the Sinai Peninsula, local media reported Tuesday.

Middle East News Agency (MENA) said no foreigners were among the dead or injured.

All the victims were taken to Sharm El-Sheikh International Hospital, 10 of them are still in a serious condition.

Road accidents are common in Egypt, with 6,000 people being killed and more than 30,000 injured in 2006 alone. Experts cite poor transport conditions and a failure by drivers to observe traffic rules as the main causes of accidents.

Egyptian authorities have launched a large-scale campaign to reduce traffic accidents.
