HELSINKI, March 31 (RIA Novosti) - Sweden does not intend to build a branch linking it to Russia's major gas pipeline project under the Baltic Sea, a news release from the Swedish authorities said Friday.

The government said that from the point of view of energy policy and protection of the environment, there are no strong reasons for expanding its national network of gas pipelines, and ruled out joining the North European Gas Pipeline (NEGP) project.

Sweden's government plans to decrease greenhouse gas emissions in the country by 25% by 2020 from the 1990 level.

According to official Swedish data, 50% of the country's power comes from nuclear and hydro-electric sources, while alternative energy sources are being actively developed.

The NEGP will run from the Baltic coast near Vyborg, on the Russian-Finnish border, to the Greifswald region in north Germany, comprising two parallel sections of 750 miles each, at a cost of 4.7 billion euros.
