TBILISI, December 26 (RIA Novosti) - Senior penitentiary officials in Georgia held an emergency meeting Monday to discuss the handling of mass prison hunger strikes, a Justice Ministry spokesperson said.

Hundreds of inmates went on strike in prisons across the country in support of last week's protest in the western city of Kutaissi, where criminal bosses rebelled against being transferred to a different prison.

The prisoners are also protesting poor living conditions.

Authorities are currently negotiating with the inmates in an effort to persuade them to stop the strike.
