IRKUTSK, July 7 (RIA Novosti, Alexander Batalin) - The Thai ambassador to Russia was in Siberia Thursday, where he discussed potential commercial deals.

Ambassador Sorayut Prompo said Thailand intended to purchase Russian military fighters and drinking water from Lake Baikal.

"Thailand and Russia are currently holding consultations on a possible purchase of Russian Su-30MK fighters," he said. "Thailand intends to purchase a large number of fighters for the Thai Armed Forces."

The program of the Ambassador's visit to Irkutsk (Siberia) includes a tour of the Irkut aircraft factory, which makes the Su-30MK, a highly maneuverable two-seater fighter designed to conduct air-to-air and air-on-surface strikes. The factory is currently working on a major export contract for India.

During a meeting with Governor of the Irkutsk region Boris Govorin, the ambassador discussed possible cooperation between Thailand and the Siberian region. Prompot admired the quality and purity of drinking water from Lake Baikal, the world's deepest fresh water lake, and said he was ready to establish a joint venture to bottle and promote it internationally.

The diplomat also highlighted prospects for investment in the timber, food and mining sectors, as well as the tourist industry.
