MOSCOW, July 1 (RIA Novosti) - U.S. Ambassador to Russia Alexander Vershbow said the democratic process in Russia was irreversible. The course Russia is pursuing does not raise any doubts, the ambassador said at a reception dedicated to American Independence Day Friday.
Russia has never had broader opportunities for building a democratic and free society and for full integration with western partners, he said.
A new political generation has taken form in the post-Soviet space, Vershbow said.
Vershbow who has worked in the country for four years and met with many Russian colleagues and partners, said that he has observed Russia's movement toward democracy.
He expressed hope that his embassy and the U.S. as a whole had made a contribution to the promotion of bilateral relations and mutual interests.
No one could predict the September 11 tragedy four years ago when Vershbow arrived in Russia and no one could assume that Russia and the Unites States would become allies against a new enemy, international terrorism, the ambassador said.
Vershbow will complete his diplomatic mission soon, but said he hopes to return to Russia.
