Moscow: Russian, Syrian officials discuss joint efforts to resist terrorism

The Kremlin's special envoy for the Middle East, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov met in Moscow on Monday with the Syrian president's political and media advisor Bouthaina Shaaban, according to Interfax reports.

"The parties discussed the situation in Syria and in the Middle East upon the whole. Prospects of political settlement in Syria on the basis of the Geneva Communiqué of June 30 2012, and the necessity to implement the UN Security Council's Resolution No. 2118 on the elimination of chemical weapons in Syria were discussed at length," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement posted on its website.

"Special focus was on the issue of consolidation of the Syrian authorities' and patriotic-minded opposition's efforts to counter the terrorist threat which is assuming a dangerous regional dimension with regard to the current developments in Iraq," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

"Both parties confirmed the two countries' mutual interest in maintaining an active political dialogue on a range of issues of mutual interest," it said.
