St. Petersburg rallies in support of Ukraine's Russian-speakers, Berkut riot police

A rally in support of Ukraine's Russian-speakers and Berkut riot police is under way in St. Petersburg. Several thousand people are attending, the press secretary of the United Russia party's regional department, Orlana Zapolskaya, has told the ITAR-TASS correspondent.

According to her, some 10,000 people are attending the meeting outside the Oktyabrsky concert hall in the city centre, with many more still arriving, so the overall number of attendees is expected to reach 15,000.

The basic idea of the rally is to voice indignation over the treatment of Ukraine's Russian-speakers, the Berkut elite riot police, and also to support the decision of the Russian Parliament's upper house, which authorized the President to use Russian troops in Ukraine, she said.

The first to address those present was the head of the regional branch of United Russia, the speaker of the city legislature, Vyacheslav Makarov. Also taking part are members of the city legislature and NGO officials.
