The Black Sea Fleet has dismissed the reports that its troops are involved in the blocking of the Belbek airfield close to Sevastopol. "No subdivision of the Black Sea Fleet has been advanced into the Belbek area, let alone involved in blocking it," the spokesperson said.

"Given the unstable situation around the Black Sea Fleet bases in the Crimea, and the places where our service members live with their families, security has been stepped by the Black Sea Fleet's anti-terror units," the BSF official said.

Crimean self-defence units deployed along perimeter of Belbek Airport

An informed source has told reporters that, according to updated information, Belbek Airport, near Sevastopol, has been under control of self-defence units, set up in Crimea, since 23:00 pm on Thursday. According to the source, Russian servicemen have nothing to do with the developments at the airport. The self-defence force has no uniform insignia. They said they want to prevent the arrival of any militants.

Earlier it was reported that Russian servicemen have been in control of Belbek Airport, near Sevastopol. Reporters quote informed military sources in Sevastopol as saying that the servicemen came to Belbek to prevent the arrival of any militants. The servicemen are deployed along the perimeter of the airport and have a command staff personnel carrier with a communication device at their disposal.

Russia’s Black Sea Fleet abides by basic international agreements - Moscow

Russia’s Black Sea Fleet strictly abides by basic international agreements, the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Information and Press Department has announced.

"Regarding the statements about Russia's violation of the agreements on the Black Sea fleet, we declare that in the current difficult situation the Russian Black Sea fleet is strictly adhering to said agreements," Russian agencies quoted a foreign ministry spokesman as saying.

According to a source, "the Black Sea Fleet’s armored units were displaced in accordance with basic agreements and didn’t require someone’s approval".

The Russian Defense Ministry closely follows everything that is happening around the Black Sea Fleet, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu told journalists on Wednesday.

"Measures are taken to guarantee the security of our facilities," he said.

Turchinov calls Russian Black Sea Fleet servicemen stationed in Crimea not to leave the boundaries

Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada Chairman and interim President Alexander Turchinov is calling on the Russian Black Sea Fleet servicemen stationed in Crimea not to leave the boundaries of their base determined by the relevant Ukrainian-Russian agreements.

"I am addressing the Russian Black Sea Fleet command with a demand: all military servicemen should stay within the boundaries of the territories stipulated by the agreement. Any movement of military servicemen outside this territory will be viewed as military aggression," Turchynov said while speaking at the Verkhovna Rada on Thursday.

Turchynov also warned that "Ukrainian enemies should not try to destabilize the situation, should not encroach on our independence, sovereignty, and territory."
