US warship enters Black Sea, another expected later

A US warship entered the waters of the Black Sea on Wednesday morning and another American combat vessel is expected to join it in late afternoon, a spokesman for the Russian Navy headquarters said.

The spokesman said that the warship, currently sailing in the Black Sea, is the flagship of the US Navy Sixth Fleet, the USS Mount Whitney, and it will be joined by the USS Ramage, an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer.

"The US warships will not enter the Russian territorial waters," the spokesman said but did not specify the possible mission of the warships in the Black Sea.

He added that the warships will remain sailing in neutral waters in the eastern part of the Black Sea.

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry said earlier in the week that two American warships, boasting a significant crew of marines, were expected to enter the waters of the Black Sea and remain there until February 24-25.

The USS Mount Whitney, a Blue Ridge class ship, entered the Ukrainian port of Sevastopol in the fall of 2008 and stayed there anchored for several days.
