Olympic torch relay crosses into Chukotka

Defying heavy snowfall and winds of up to 45 meters a second, the terrestrial branch of the torch relay of the Sochi Olympics has crossed from the northeastern Russian region of Magadan to the neighboring region of Chukotka.

The torch is now in the regional capital Anadyr, where a colorful welcoming ceremony is to be held on Tuesday following an expected let-up in the storm.

From Anadyr, 50 runners will carry the flame around the region.

The next Russian area on the way is the peninsular region of Kamchatka.

The relay started in Moscow on the 7th of October and will reach its finish in Sochi on the 7th of February, the opening day of the 22nd Winter Olympics.
