A 49-year-old employee allegedly stabbed two colleagues to death Friday in a canteen at Beijing's imperial palace, or Forbidden City, reports said.

Police detained the man suspected of carrying out the attack. He was seriously injured, state media quoted a police bulletin as saying.

The man, identified only by the surname Zheng, allegedly tried to kill himself after the attack, the official Xinhua news agency quoted staff at the former palace as saying.

The stabbings happened during "a brawl among employees" in the canteen, the agency said.

No tourists were injured in the incident, it said. It was not clear if any tourists witnessed the incident.
