Cyprus ex-Defense Minister sentenced to five years for explosion at a military base in 2011

Friday, the Court of Cyprus has sentenced former Defense Minister Costas Papacostas to five years’ imprisonment due to the case of an explosion at a military base in 2011; three other defendants have received two years in prison each.

The explosion at the Evangelos Florakis military base in Mari occurred on July 11, 2011. 13 people were killed and the largest power plant on the island was destroyed.

Billions of dollars of losses became one of the causes of the financial crisis in Cyprus. Papacostas was found guilty of manslaughter and criminal negligence, which resulted in the death of 13 people.

He was facing life imprisonment.

Head of the fire service Andreas Nicolaou and his Deputy Kharalambos Kharalambus, head of the unit for combating emergency situations Andreas Loisidis are sentenced to two years for causing death by negligence.
