Japan will need 51 billion dollars for decontamination efforts after the nation's worst nuclear disaster, five times what the government has allocated, reports said Wednesday.

The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology said Tuesday that cleanup work in the no-go zone around the Fukushima Daiichi plant will cost up to 2 trillion yen, while 3.1 trillion yen will be needed in outlying areas.

The decontamination effort is behind schedule and levels of radiation remain high in some areas.

The government is conducting the work without knowing how much it will cost to achieve a level that would meet residents' expectations, institute member Junko Nakanishi was quoted by public broadcaster NHK as saying.
