The fight against the Afghan drug threat is "a priority of the United Nations," said the Deputy Secretary-General of the world body, Jan Eliasson.

He believes that in order to combat the flow of opiates from Afghanistan it is necessary to put the economy on solid footing and to do so smoothly.

"It is important to move from a state of war to economic development. But these changes do not happen overnight," said Eliasson.

The Deputy Secretary General, who had just returned from a trip to Afghanistan, said that according to the UN, Afghanistan has a 75 to 80 percent share of the world’s opiate production.
